Baby Gate – Pick the right type

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

When a baby is at the stage of crawling around and learning how to stand and walk on his own, it becomes difficult for parents to just stay at one place to have that protective watch over their child. This is why child proof gates are created.

But, the question here lies which one would be the best for your home and your baby? Well, we have rounded up the important considerations that you should make before making the purchase.

There are two main kinds of baby safety gates:

Hardware, wall mounted safety gates: These  attach with screws directly into a solid wall or wood post and are useful to block high-risk areas such as stairs, fireplaces and kitchens. These gates are the safer option as they are more secure.

Pressure mounted safety gates: These are easy to set up and take down. The gate is tightened between two solid wall surfaces. These work well in doorways where there is solid wood construction. But they cannot withstand as much pressure as hardware, wall mounted gates.  Pressure-mounted and freestanding gates can fall over if the child pushes hard. So these gates are not safe to put at the top of the stairs. The plus point is that it is easier to re-install, in case you keep moving.

Before you begin to search for the perfect baby gate, you will need to think about a few things to help keep your baby safe. Consider these points before you finalize on the perfect one for your needs:

  • Check the label for an ASTM /JPMA certification (American Society for Testing and Materials and Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association).
  • Measure the doorway or top of the stairs, so that you buy a gate that fits enough to block the space.
  • Look for a hardware-mounted gate that attaches to the door-frame without any openings to trap fingers or neck.
  • There should be no more than 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) between the floor and the gate bottom to keep a child from slipping underneath.
  • Check for sharp edges and pieces that could cut or hurt a toddler’s hands. If the gate is made from wood, check for splinters.
  • Do not buy gates with openings that a child could use for climbing. The gate should be no less than three quarters of the child’s height. Safety gates should be a minimum height of 60 cm and should be at least three-quarters of your child’s height to prevent accidents.
  • Baby safety gates come in a variety of materials such as metal, plastic, fabric or wood, giving you the choice to select what is most desirable for your home, yourself and baby.

SAFETY NOTES:

  • Keep large toys away from the gate to prevent kids from using them to climb over.
  • Pressure-mounted gates may be used for doors between rooms . Remember to place the pressure bar away from the child.
  • Gates that swing out should never be used at the top of stairways.
  • Stop using the gate when the child is about 2 years old.
  • Never use a safety gate with a horizontal bar across the floor at the top of the stairs.
  • Do not buy the older criss-cross diamond-shaped accordion gates, which have been known to trap babies’ heads and clothing.
  • Pet gates are not a suitable substitute for child safety gates, as they are not secure enough or designed for use with infants or toddlers.
