Sharing photos online is a great way to make distant family and friends part of your beautiful parenting journey.Birthdays, milestones, first walk, first word, everything needs to be captured for lifetime memories. But the privacy of baby and photos can be a concern. We’re merrily snapping away on our iPhones, uploading moments to Instagram, Facebook. At the same time, we are worrying about privacy issues. Who can see our photos? Who can download them? How safely are they stored? Who is viewing the location data? What if we get hacked?
A parent on average will post almost 1,000 photos of a child online before the child turns 5, according to a recent survey. Many have never checked their privacy settings—even though photos often contain data about where they were taken.
The convenience of sharing photos with friends (and non-friends) through social networking sites and blogs is undeniable. Unfortunately, so are the dangers. Not only can photos be stolen and used by strangers, but many photos, especially those taken by phones or devices with GPS technology, contain tags that reveal their location, which means viewers can figure out where exactly they were snapped. In other words, if a parent takes a photo of their child playing at home and then posts it online, it’s possible for strangers to know exactly where they live and current location.
Some people who share photos say they are building an online community. Indeed, there are definitely benefits to creating such support structures of parents. But the benefits to children are less clear, and the risks are high enough that we would encourage parents to think about posting a photograph on in private space rather than in public social media.
At BabyOnBoard, we have a private family space for sharing images and keeping them neatly tucked away from prying eyes while making them easy to access for family and friends CHOSEN by you. Private family space means the only users invited by parents can see the baby photos and milestones. All accounts are active but private.
